What it is.

Vitamin A is one of the most studied ingredients in skincare. The family of vitamin A derivatives — known as retinoids — supports the skin's natural renewal process: the steady turnover of cells that keeps the surface smooth, even, and resilient.

Retinoids are not all the same. They sit on a scale of strength. Prescription retinoids like tretinoin are the most potent, and the most likely to irritate. Retinyl palmitate — the form used in the Skin Theorie range — sits at the gentlest end.

It is an ester of retinol and palmitic acid. Once applied, skin gradually converts it toward its active form. That conversion is what makes it mild: the effect is slower and steadier than stronger retinoids, with far less of the dryness, flaking, and sensitivity they can bring.

What it does.

Supports skin renewal

Vitamin A encourages the skin's natural cell turnover. Over weeks, that supports a smoother surface and a more even tone.

Softens the look of fine lines

By supporting renewal, vitamin A helps soften the appearance of fine lines and improve overall texture — gradually, without forcing it.

A gentler introduction to retinoids

For skin that has never tolerated retinol or stronger retinoids, retinyl palmitate is a considered way to access the benefits of vitamin A with minimal disruption.

Works overnight

Vitamin A is an evening ingredient. Applied at night, it works alongside the skin's natural overnight renewal cycle, away from direct sun.

Who it's for.

Skin showing early signs of ageing — fine lines, uneven texture, a slower-looking recovery. Anyone curious about vitamin A but wary of the irritation associated with stronger retinoids.

A note on use.

Vitamin A makes skin more sensitive to sunlight. Always apply a broad-spectrum SPF each morning when using a vitamin A product, and introduce it gradually — three or four evenings a week to begin with.

Retinoids, including retinyl palmitate, are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We don't recommend using Stillness Lux Night Cream — our vitamin A formula — if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please speak with your healthcare provider.
